For our clients (previous and current) seeking a new training environment. The following information can be considered as our policy on what/who to look for in a fitness professional.
What to look for in a professional fitness coach:
1. Are they a degreed fitness professional?
A degree (MS preferred) in athletic training, exercise science, and related fitness majors
2. Experience and track record.
Someone that has extensive experience from a variety of training disciplines.
3. Persona
Is this person someone you can work with? Personality type that matches yours?
4. Certifications with ACCOUNTABILITY
I am a big believer in certifications that maintain a strict testing protocol. This means you must pass a written, physical, and/or instructional test to earn your certificate. Below are some examples; there may be some quality certifications that are not mentioned.
*Here are some certifications to look for when considering a fitness professional:
a. Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS); through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA); You must have a degree or be of collegiate senior standing to sit for this exam(Your certificate will be presented to you when you show proof of your earned 4 year degree).
b. NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) - also NSCA (you do not need a degree to sit for exam)
c. ATC - Certified Athletic Trainer
d. HFI - Health Fitness Instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
e. RKC - Russian Kettlebell Certified Instructor
f. ACE - American Council on Exercise - Personal Trainer certification only
g. USAW - USA Weightlifting Club Coach
h. CrossFit - LEVEL 2 and/or 3 trainer only
5. Nutrition
General rule: Anybody can claim the title of "nutritionist". The formally educated can claim the title of "dietitian"(see #2 below).
Additionally:
1. Look for degreed professionals with a degree in nutrition (BS, MS, PhD)
2. Registered Dietitian (RD) - to get this license you must: a. complete a 4 year degree in nutrition from an accredited institution b. complete an internship lasting 9-12 months c. Pass the certification exam to claim the title "dietitian".
3. Biochemists specializing in nutrition science that have accumulated experience in a laboratory environment.
